After Emily graduated from high school, she joined the Army National Guard and served as a medic for five years. Her military service inspired her to go to nursing school with the help of the GI Bill. Emily enjoys spending her time outside of teaching and campaigning volunteering with her children at local farms and the Hunger Task Force. She is a gardener, marathon runner, and triathlete.
